His and hers Matching Antique Scroll Chairs
Just finished up with a four week restoration on these two matching beauties! A customer had brought these century old chairs in for complete restoration and that’s just what they got! I’m still amazed that the two “his and her” chairs had never been separated for more than 100 years! Both had been reupholstered many-many times and it had taken its toll on the wood for sure. Upon arrival, it was apparent the rocking chair had gone through a really bad upholstery job a few years back and that was going to take quite a bit to fix. Once both chairs were taken apart down to their wood frames, it was clear all the original, chewed up nail strips would need to be cut out and replace if any hope existed for good solid chairs again. Hand sanding all the chair parts was the only way to remove the existing finish due to all the curved pieces. Old broken springs were removed along with the horse hair and hay used for cushioning back in the day. New jute webbing and high density foam would be used to replace them.
The chairs were determined to be made originally out of Alder wood. A nice wood for chairs such as these due to its smoothness and lack of knots which makes curved pieces easier. And Alder is the softest wood in the hard wood family but unfortunately this wood is void of any striking grain like an Oak, Walnut or Cedar might have. Traditional transparent stain wasn’t accepted by the Alder so a solid stain in the color of Sedona Red was used to mask the original manufacturers splices, joints, laminations of wood pieces as well as the hundreds and hundreds of now filled in staple, tack and nail holes left over from all the previous upholstery jobs. Afterwards, 3 coats of polycrylic was applied.
Finally, 2 gorgeous tri-colored cowhides were selected for the coverings. Each chair having 3 panels; one for the seat cushion and one for front upper and rear upper cushions. Over 350 hand hammered in antique brass decorative nails trim out both chairs. Now these century old chairs are ready for another 100 years of enjoyment!

The Santa Fe
I rescued this Rocker on a road trip to Santa Fe New Mexico. As with all the others, it has had a full restoration. It is the most comfortable Rocker you'll ever sit in. Those compound curved back slats support you in just the right places to give a nice relaxing rock with a taller head board. The stain color is Honey and boy did it ever do a great job of letting that oak's grain pattern explode! Check out those lines! The darker tri-color hide has just enough brown to complement the Honey stain. Don't let this one slip away.

Denver Dry Goods Co Furniture Department Denver Colorado
Vintage American Craftsman Oak Rocker $OLD!
Local piece of Denver History
I have a fantastic piece of Denver Colorado History for sale. A Vintage Rocking Chair from The Denver Dry Good Company. The Denver Dry Goods Company building was built in Downtown Denver back in 1889 along California Street stretching the entire block from 15th to 16th street. The department store claimed to be the largest department store west of Chicago. A description once read, “The Largest Store in the Central West, 400 Feet Long - Seven Acres of Floor Area, 1,200 employees…” The furniture department, were this rocker was sold, was located on the 6th floor of the building. This building is now listed on the National Register of Historic places. In 1994 the building was converted to apartments after a 100 year run. This Rocking Chair hasn't gone far from where it was originally made and sold right here in Denver Colorado! The manufacture's badge is still located on the bottom of the chair. And if you Look close, you can read the very fine print at the bottom of the badge, that says, “The Whitehead & Hoag CO. Newark, NJ” Whitehead & Hoag was founded in 1892 in Newark, New Jersey. Benjamin Whitehead was a printer and Chester Hoag was a paper salesman, they joined together and acquired 3 patents which led them to manufacture among other things, Buttons, which became in high demand as a cost effective way for stores to advertise.
This American Craftsman Style Rocker is rock solid and has a box cushion covered with beautiful cowhide that sets right down in the chair. Here’s your chance to own and display a Century old piece of Denver’s history!
